I don't agree with this statement, though I sometimes think this is true. In my opinion, it's not the money, but the lack of it that is the root of all evil. If you think about all the crimes committed daily in the city, I'd hazard a guess that over 80% of them are money related.
Petty crime almost entirely stems from lack of money. That being said, white-collar crime doesn't come from lack of money, but the greed and corruption of wanting more, that's where money is the root of all evil.
But comparing both cases, I believe lack of money causes more crime than money itself does, hence it's more evil.
