It would absolutely be incorrect for the government to impose censorship on social media posts. Or anything, at least in a country that recognizes the right of citizens to be free to speak without censorship by their government. It is not correct to describe the actions of a publisher or platform as “censorship”. It’s their platform, they get to curate the content however they want. Even content submitted by users. You don’t think it’s “censorship” that they don’t allow porn or terrorist recruitment videos, do you? Yes, they may elect to delete fake news distributed through their platform. In fact, many feel that this is an obligation on them as good corporate citizens. More importantly, this is extremely important to their advertisers, who absolutely cannot risk having their ads associated with fake news. No advertisers, no Facebook.
